Company Profile

We at Flex-a-lite have been leading the way in cooling product technology for over 37 years. We pride ourselves on not just designing, manufacturing and marketing product -- our focus on continual process improvement, and customer satisfaction with exceptional value and service have kept us in the forefront of our markets.

The company serves four marketplaces, the passenger car or automotive after market with belt-driven engine cooling fans, electric fans, transmission oil coolers, newly expanded engine oil cooler line, and other components. Since 1984, more than 80% of all Peterbilt Truck Company vehicles (12,000 to 15,000 annually) rolled off the production line with a Flex-a-lite fan.  The first plastic truck fans were designed and marketed by the company in 1968. In 1977, the first one-piece plastic truck fan was produced, followed in 1979 by the first injection molded truck fans. In 1982, the company began producing vertical incubator systems for salmon and trout hatcheries. That product line, operating today as MariSource, is sold worldwide. In all cases, Flex-a-lite's distribution channels are handled by direct sales managers employed at the company who then use manufacturer representatives to augment the sales effort. Fisheries products are sold directly to State and Federal government agencies, truck fans are sold through various distribution channels including Paccar, Freightliner, Volvo GM, and Navistar. Automotive distribution is handled through warehouse distributors or catalog sales organizations located throughout the North American continent as well as Pacific Rim countries.

Flex-a-lite also has a Custom metal fabrication division serving many customers as a fabricator of various components usually made of shaped metals or plastics. The excess capacity within the company's facility, its high-volume and high tonnage punch presses, various sizes and precision press brakes, and its capabilities for welding or assembling parts ensure excellent service and value for local customers.

Flex-a-lite Consolidated encourages and supports in community groups as well as industry associations such as: SEMA, APAA, HDBF, World Trade Center-Tacoma, Chamber of Commerce, and Rotary. In May 1998, Flex-a-lite was awarded the "Outstanding Business of the Year" award by the Tacoma-Pierce County Chamber of Commerce. In October 1998, our owner and President, Rainer O. Willingham was awarded the "Boss of the Year" award by the Fife Chamber of Commerce. In 1999, Rainer O. Willingham was awarded the "Athena Award" for his outstanding contribution to women in the automotive industry. Also, Flex-a-lite Consolidated was awarded the "1999 Manufacturer of the Year" by Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA).  The company's metal fabrication division and design staff completed a project with the Washington State Historical Museum and Dale Chihuly Studios, volunteering time and materials to build the Mt. Rainier Ice Caves exhibit for the 100th Anniversary celebration of Mt. Rainier National Park. Flex-a-lite's marketing and engineering departments host two student and two teacher interns each year. At Flex-a-lite, workplace experience for students and teachers has been granted to students and with teachers for several years through various local or state programs.

We've had some exciting changes at Flex-a-lite in the past three years -- land was purchased in Fife, Washington and our company moved the entire manufacturing plant from a very old, nonfunctional building into a modern clear-span facility. The building is a total of 57,000 square feet with 6,000 square feet of office space, and 9 acres available for future growth. We also share a 35,000 square foot outside storage area with our sister company, Cascade Plastics Co., Inc., a custom injection molding company. The location in Fife, Washington (in between Tacoma and Seattle) allows easy access to the Port of Tacoma, Interstate 5, SeaTac airport, and railway systems.
